• Around the Cot
• Watch Me
• Front Sit
• Step Sit
Purpose: The Warm-Up helps Josie transition into training mode, build engagement with the handler, and prepare for learning
1. Sit — Neutral, firm tone. Hand signal: palm facing up.
2. Place — Neutral, firm tone. Hand signal: open hand guiding toward the cot.
3. Down — Neutral, firm tone. Hand signal: palm facing down.
4. Stay — Slightly firmer tone. Hand signal: stop-sign hand.
5. Recall (Come) — Fun, excited tone. No required hand signal. You may use any hand signal you like, such as clapping, but stay consistent.
6. Heel (Loose Leash Walking) — Neutral tone. Hold the treat at your chest to encourage eye contact and engagement while walking. If right-handed, hold the treat with your right hand and the leash with your left hand. As the dog improves, gradually fade the treat.
7. Break (Release Command) — Happy, excited, high-pitched tone. No hand signal required. You may throw a treat away from the dog to clearly release them from the command.
8. Leave it & Drop it (Additional Commands)-- Helping impulse control while training with distractions
1. Command Consistency
Pick one command word and one hand signal only, and stay consistent. Don't change them around.
2. One Command Rule
Give the command once. Avoid repeating commands. If the dog does not respond, help the dog succeed instead of repeating the command.
• Distance
• Duration
• Distractions
All commands are practiced every day.
No command is dropped from the program.
Difficulty increases throughout the program using the 3 Ds.
